Basale soppu health benefits
Basale soppu is a leafy vegetable that is native to India. It is called basale soppu in Kannada, upodika in Sanskrit and its scientific name is Basella rubra. Basale soppu in English is Malabar spinach.
Malabar spinach or basale soppu is a perennial vine plant. The plant needs good support to climb. It can also creep on the ground. Leaves are fleshy and dark green in colour. Two varieties of basale soppu are grown, in which one variety plant has a reddish stem with green leaves and another variety has a greenish stem and leaves.
Packed with a rich amount of nutrients it is renowned as a superfood. It strengthens our body as well as increases the immunity of our body. It brings a cooling effect on our body.
Its stem and leaves are used in cooking many dishes like soups, salads, thambuli, rasam, dosa and this plant also used to cure many diseases.
Traditionally it is used as a vegetable in India, nowadays it is attracted by nutritionists because of its high nutrition value. Researches shown that Basale soppu consists of good amount of vitamins and minerals which is necessary for our health.
Basale leaves consists of carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus, iron, nitrogen, niacin, thiamine and vitamin A, C. It also contains antioxidants and a great source of fibre.
Its leaves and stem can use raw or cooked form. Leaves can be dried and used as medicine for many ailments.

Malnutrition
In villages, children are suffering from severe malnutrition. This can be overcome by using Basale leaves regularly. Basale leaves juice 2 tsp and 1 tsp of honey is taken to cure this condition.
Anaemia
Juice of Baale leaves is taken regularly which improves the production of haemoglobin in our body. It cures the anaemic condition in children and women. Pregnant women also benefit if they use leaves of Basale daily in their diet.
Mouth ulcer
As Basale leaves are rich in vitamin B, it relieves from mouth ulcer. You can chew 1-2 leaves two times a day to overcome this condition.
Acidity and stomach ulcer
Taking Basale leaves juice or eating this in the form of food regularly treats acidity and stomach ulcer. It protects the outer lining of the stomach and intestine from the damage due to digestive juices.
Memory power
Nutrition packed basale soppu helps to increase memory power in children and it treats memory loss condition in elders.
Sleeplessness
Research suggests that vitamin B helps to have good sleep. Basale leaves containing vitamin B which helps to overcome the condition of sleeplessness.

The plant can be grown from seeds or plant cuttings. It needs rich soil and direct sunlight. You have to water the plant well, it needs moist soil.
In winter plant growth is affected but in summer and mansoon it grows well. The plant needs some support to climb as it is a climber. After 1-2 months can you use the harvest the leaves for cooking.
Basale soppu in recipe
Basale palya
Basale palya prepared using basale leaves and stem cures constipation, stomach burning and mouth ulcers. It goes well with rice, roti and dosa.
Ingredients needed for palya
Basale soppu 250 gm
Toor dal 100 gm
Moong dal 50 gm
Green chilli 3-4
Salt as per taste
Turmeric 1/2 tsp
Fresh grated coconut 1 cup
Urad dal 1 tsp
Mustard seeds 1 tsp
Curry leaves 7-8
Hing 1/4 tsp
Coconut oil 4-5 tsp
Coriander leaves
Preparation
Soak Moong dal for 8 hours. Then Cook and moong dal and toor dal in a cooker.
Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and urad dal to the pan when oil heats up.
As mustard sputters, add curry leaves, green chilli and hing to it.
Then add chopped balase leaves to it, fry it so that it cooks well.
Next, add cooked moong dal and toor dal. Mix it well.
Add turmeric and salt to it and mix well.
Finally, add fresh grated coconut and coriander to it.
Basale soppu thambuli
Basale thambuli is prepared using basale leaves only and also with other plant leaves like palak, coriander, curry leaves, moringa leaves. If use this thambuli daily at the beginning of lunch with rice, your body health improves. It helps in digestion, treats constipation.
Ingredients needed for thambuli :
Basale leaves 8-10
Cumin 1/2 tsp
Black pepper 8-10
Fresh grated coconut 1/.2 cup
Curry leaves 5-6
Mustard seeds 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Salt
Ghee 2 tsp
Curd or buttermilk 1 cup
Garlic 8-10
Preparation :
Take ghee in a pan and add black pepper and cumin to it, after cumin fries add basale leaves to it. Fry it well and then add freshly grated coconut to it. Then grind it adding turmeric powder and salt.
You can also add chopped onions and garlic cloves while frying which is optional.
For seasoning, take ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds, curry leaves and garlic to it and fry well and add this to thambuli mixture. Finally, add curd to it.
