Drumstick a long, slender fruit of drumstick plant which is called sahjan in Hindi, nuggekai in Kannada, moringa, horseradish and drumstick in English, Murungai in Tamil, shwetha mareech in Sanskrit and its scientific name is Moringa pterygosperma.

It grows all over India and it is native to India. It grows from 15-20 feet. Drumstick pods and leaves are used in cooking as vegetables and also in home remedies. It is mentioned in Ayurveda that drumstick pods and leaves cures more than 300 ailments. In India it has been used since ages.

All parts of drumstick plant  namely roots, leaves, bark. flowers and seeds are used in Ayurvedic medicine as well as in home remedies. Fresh leaves, dried powder called churna, dried seeds, oil extracted from seeds are used to cure many ailments in Ayurveda.

Drumstick and its leaves consists of Beta carotene, Thiamine, Riboflavin, vitamin C, calcium, carbohydrates, fibre, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc and protein. 

Its leaves rich in calcium more than that calcium present in milk and rich in vitamin C more than that of orange.  It also contains more amount of vitamin A and potassium.

It is a super food for growing children as it contains calcium, iron, vitamin A and B which is essential for healthy growth of children.  

The leaves are bitter in taste with slight sweetness. It treats indigestion, loss of appetite, eye problems, joint pain.

Nowadays drumstick is named as super food by nutritionists because of its high nutrition value.

Drumstick and its leaves are anti inflammatory, anti pyretic, antioxidant and diuretic.

Drumstick leaves or nugge soppu is used in preparing dishes like palya, rasam, curries, pathrode and bonda.

Aids in digestion

Drumstick pods and its leaves contains fibre in good amount aids in digestion and avoids constipation. It is also helps piles to cure. It relieves from stomach pain due to indigestion. Drumstick pods are daily used as food or leaves juice is taken regularly cures digestive disorders.

Cures anaemia

Drumstick and its leaves contains good amount of iron, regular use of drumstick and its leaves with food increases the production of haemoglobin and you can overcome by anaemic condition.

Drumstick juice or its leaves juice is taken on an empty stomach removes stomach worms.  By this it cures loss of appetite due to the presence of worms in stomach or intestine. 

Aids in weight loss

Drumstick or its leaves juice burns unwanted fat and aids in weight loss. Its juice is taken on an empty stomach. This should be followed by healthy food habits and daily exercise.

Strengthens bones

Drumstick and its leaves contains rich amount of calcium. Regularly taking this with food strengthens bones and it relieves from pain in joints. It also treats arthritis and sciatica. Drumstick leaves with garlic paste when applied on knee and other joints relieves from joint pain and knee pain.

Treats sprain

Drumstick leaves paste is mixed with mustard oil and applied on sprained leg which cures it.

Anorexia 

As drumstick and its leaves are rich in nutrients regular use of this with food or in the form of juice cures the condition of anorexia. 

Sleeplessness

Drumstick root decoction is prepared and taken with jaggery helps to get good sleep. It relieves from the condition insomnia.

Blood purifier

It contains antioxidants and helps to purify the blood.  This reduces the formation of pimples and black heads. 

Night blindness

Regular use of drumstick and its leaves provides sufficient nutrients necessary for children growth and it also cures night blindness. Regular use of drumstick leaves with green gram improves eye sight and eye health.

Kajal for eye

Naturally prepared kajal using drumstick leaves is healthy for eye.  Its saves our eye from the side effects of artificial kajal.

For lactating mothers

Drumstick and its leaves provides sufficient nutrients for lactating mothers as well as their babies.  It also helps in the production of healthy milk in lactating mothers.

For nerve weakness

Drumstick flowers boiled with milk and it is taken with rock sugar and ghee which rejuvenates nerves and strengthens nerves. It also strengthens body.

Insect bite

Drumstick leaves paste is applied on insect bite relieves from inflammation and itching. 

Drumstick leaves soup for immunity

Preparation 

Wash drumstick leaves about 100 gm. Cook this adding one glass of water in a pan with closing it with lid. Then allow it to cool. Then strain it and season with cumin and add salt and pepper powder to it. This soup is very healthy soup for children and it improves immunity in children.

Drumstick leaves/nugge soppu pathrode

Drumstick leaves pathrode is prepared using tender leaves tastes better. It is a perfect snack or a side dish with regular meal. It is healthy and tasty also.

Ingredients needed 

Drumstick leaves 250 gm

Chickpeas 1 cup 

Rice 1 cup 

Red chilli 3-4

Green chilli 5-6

Coriander seeds 1 tsp

Mustard seeds 1 tsp

Cumin 1/2 tsp 

Urad dal 1 tsp

Lemon juice 2 tsp

Salt as per taste

Coconut oil 5-6 tsp

Ground nut 25 gm

Curry leaves 

Onion 2

Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp

Jaggery powder 2 tsp

Fresh grated coconut 1 cup

Preparation 

Soak chickpeas and rice for 4-5 hours and then grind it.

Then fry red chilli, coriander seeds, 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds, cumin, urad dal and curry leaves. 

Next grind soaked chickpeas, rice and fried ingredients. 

Mix ground mixture with chopped drumstick leaves and steam cook it for about 20 minutes.

Heat coconut oil in a pan and add ground nut and fry it, as it fries add mustard seeds and when it sputters add curry leaves and chopped green chilli and onion to it and fry well. 

After it fries, add turmeric powder and add mashed mixture of leaves that is steam cooked and fry it. 

Then add lemon juice, jaggery and salt, mix well and fry it for one minute. Finally add fresh grated coconut and mix well.
