Nithyapushpa named in Kannada which is known as periwinkle, Madagascar periwinkle in English, sadabahar in Hindi, nayantara in Bengali, ushamalari in Malayalam and its scientific name is Catharanthus roseus.

Nithyapushpa plant is found in Asia, Australia and it is native to Madagascar. It is a perennial shrub which blossoms throughout the year and it is an ornamental plant as well as medicinal plant also. Its leaves are dark green and shiny. Fruits are small pod like and consists many seeds in it.

This herbal plant is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine since ages. Its root, leaves and flowers are used  as medicine.

It is most commonly found in India and we can see the plant in country yard of many Indian houses. The flowers of nithyapushpa is used in worshipping God. 

There are two varieties of plants based on flowers where one is white flowering and another is pinkish purple flowering. Leaves are bitter in taste. 

Nithyapushpa leaves and flowers are rich in nutrients. Research shown that leaves are rich in alkaloids.

Nithyapushpa controls diabetes

Nithyapushpa leaves contains alkaloids and it controls diabetes. It increases the production of insulin. Fresh leaves or its dry powder is taken with water on an empty stomach. You can also take 5-6 flowers of nithyapushpa with 4-5 neem leaves which also helps to controls blood sugar levels. 

In metabolism

Nithyapushpa leaves helps in treating metabolism disorder. It helps to maintain normal metabolism This in turn avoids unhealthy weight gain or weight loss. 

Controls piles

Leaves paste is applied on piles at night and it relieves from condition. 

Controls hair fall and grey hair

Nithyapushpa leaves and flower paste is applied on scalp and washed after half an hour. It controls grey hair in young age due to hormonal change. It also removes dandruff and strengthens hair root and avoids hair fall.

Treats skin infection 

When leaves are plucked from the plant a liquid oozes out from the plant which treats skin itching. Leaves paste is applied on wounds heels the wounds.

Nithyapushpa leaves and flower paste is used in face pack which removes dead cells from the skin and it avoids acne and black head formation. It brings glow to skin and avoids formation of wrinkles on face.

Detoxification

Nithyapushpa leaves juice helps to remove toxic substances from the body and it aids in kidney and liver health. It also purifies the blood.

Longevity

Nithyapushpa plant's root contains rich alkaloids and taking dicoction prepared from the root helps in longevity. 

Cold and sore throat

Its leaves also cure cold and sore throat. You have to take decoction prepared from the leaves and flowers of nithyapushpa with honey.

Nithyapushpa plant can be easily grown in pots and it does not requires any particular weather or soil conditions. Seeds scattered from the exploding pods are germinated and many small plants are grown around the parent plant. 

We can plant these small plants or we can sow the seeds to grow plants. Organic fertiliser is provided for the plant once in a month as this plant is also used for medicinal purpose.  Much care is not needed for the plant. It needs sunlight and you have to water the plant once in a day if it is grown in pot. It flowers throughout the year.
