Nela basale is perennial plant found in Africa, America and South Asian countries.  It also known as Ceylon spinach, Water leaf, Bachali kura, Bombay basale.  

It grows from 1 to 2 feet and it is a leaf vegetable. The stem and leaves are used in cooking and it is highly nutritious which cures many ailments.

Nela basale is rich in Vitamins like A and C and it also consists of iron, calcium and other minerals. It consists of soluble fibre, Beta carotene, dietary  fibre, protein and a good amount of antioxidants.

Over cooking of leaves destroys important nutrients. Its stem and leaves are so soft and it cooks in less time.  

Nela basale leaves contains low calorie and it is good diet food for weight loss. 

Regularly using the leaves helps in digestion and avoids constipation. 

Nela basale contains antioxidants and it protects the body from free radicals which are produced during the process of digestion and due to environmental factors.

Nela basale consists of rich amount of oxalic acid and it should be avoided when anyone suffering from kidney problems and arthritis. 

Nela basale grows very well during mansoon season. You can harvest it after 6-8 weeks after planting it. It grows very easily in any condition of soil and weather.

Nela basale in recipe

Nela basale palya

Nela basale palya is good combination with rice, chapathi and roti.  Regular use of this food helps in digestion and avoids constipation. 

Ingredients needed

Nela basale leaves 250 gm

Moong dal 100 gm

Mustard seeds 1 tsp

Urad dal 1 tsp

Onion 1

Curry leaves 6-8

Green chilli 2-3

Jaggery 1 tsp

Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp

Salt as per taste 

Fresh grated coconut 1 cup

Hing 1/4 tsp

Coconut oil 4 tsp

Preparation 

Cook moong dal and keep it aside.

Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and urad dal and fry it till aroma comes.

Next add chopped onion to it and fry well.

Then add green chilli, curry leaves and hing to it and fry it.

Then add chopped nela basale leaves and fry it till it cooks and then add turmeric powder, jaggery and salt to it and mix well.

Finally add fresh grated coconut.

Nela Basale soppu thambuli

Nela basale thambuli is prepared using nela basale leaves and it can also be prepared using other plant leaves like palak, coriander, curry leaves, moringa leaves.  If use this thambuli daily at the beginning of lunch with rice, your body health improves.  It helps in digestion, treats constipation. 

Ingredients needed for thambuli : 

Nela basale leaves 200 gm

Cumin 1/2 tsp

Black pepper 8-10

Fresh grated coconut 1/.2 cup

Curry leaves 5-6

Mustard seeds 1/4 tsp 

Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp 

Salt

Ghee 2 tsp

Curd or butter milk 1 cup

Garlic 8-10 

Preparation : 

Take ghee in a pan and add black pepper and cumin to it, after cumin fries add nela basale leaves to it.  Fry it well and then add fresh grated coconut to it. Then grind it adding turmeric powder and salt.

You can also add chopped onions and garlic cloves while frying which is optional.

For seasoning, take ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds, curry leaves and garlic to it and fry well and add this to thambuli mixture.  Finally add curd to it.
