It is common to see curry plant in many Indian houses country yard where leaves are daily used in the kitchen for the seasoning of curries, rasam, chutney and other dishes.  Karibevu or Curry leaves have a good fragrance which adds a good aroma and taste to the dishes.  But curry leaves also have medicinal properties and it is used in home remedies and Ayurvedic medicine.  

Curry plant also called by the name kadipatha in Hindi, karibevu in Kannada and its scientific name is Murraya koenigii.  In Sanskrit, it is known as Surabhi Nimba. It is native to India and this plant also found in South East Asian countries.

Curry plant grows from 4-10 feet, under good soil and weather condition, it grows like a small tree.  All the parts of the plant are useful as medicine.  Leaves, fruits, seeds and bark of the plant used in home remedies.

In Indian cooking seasoning of any dish is important.  This enhances not only the taste and flavour of food also our health aspect. Seasoning avoids the bad effects of too spicy food and junk food on the stomach and digestive system.  

Regular use of curry leaves in our diet helps to increase the secretion of digestive juices and it improves digestion. 

Curry leaves are packed with carbohydrates, fibre, calcium, phosphorus, iron and vitamins like A, B, C, E.

Nutrition packed curry leaves help to remove unwanted fat, treats stomach pain and controls vomiting.  It improves immunity and the overall health of the body.

Curry leaves effectively control diabetes where its juice, dried leaves powder or tablet is taken with controlled food.

Curry leaves relieve from indigestion and vomit. Curry leaves are mixed with cumin and crushed and added to buttermilk.  Then adding rock salt and it is taken for indigestion.

Due to skipping meals, not having food in time and eating too spicy and junk food, digestion is affected.  Constipation, loss of appetite, bloating, weakness are the side effects of not having proper food.  Raw curry leaves, cumin, asafoetida is fried with ghee and this powder is added to buttermilk and a pinch of rock salt is added which cures digestive problems effectively.  Take this preparation 2-3 times a day. It improves digestion and the appetite is increased. 

In summer severe heat causes vomit and loose motion due to indigestion. Curry leaves crushed and is taken with buttermilk with rock salt to treat the condition.

Curry leaves with buttermilk also treat cholera. 

Curry leaves are fried with ghee and powdered. This powder is added to curd and this preparation is taken 2-3 times to treat diarrhoea. 

Curry plant bark is used to treat many types of skin diseases.  Its bark paste is mixed with lemon juice applied on insect bite treats the condition.

Juice of 5-6 curry leaves, buttermilk, lemon juice and a little amount of rock salt can be taken to relieve the vomiting sensation in pregnant women. 

Curry leaves juice with cardamom powder cures urinary problems.

Curry leaves for diabetes

You have taken fresh curry leaves on an empty stomach everyday morning.  Regularly you should maintain a good diet with exercise and walking. You have to continue this for 3-4 weeks to control effectively sugar level in blood.  But healthy food habits and daily exercise should be practised always keeps the body healthy.

Powdered dry curry leaves, fried fenugreek powder and dried amla powder mixed together.  This powder is taken with buttermilk before food two times a day controls diabetes considerably.

Curry fruits are crushed and used with food to treat many blood disorders.

In Indian cooking, seasoning plays an important role.  Without seasoning the dishes, cooking is not complete. This seasoning enhances the flavour and also taste of the food as well as benefits on the health of the body. Ingredients are used for seasoning are cooking oil or ghee, mustard seeds, curry leaves, cumin, red chilli.  Onion, garlic, pepper, ginger are also used for some dishes. 

If we take spicy food and junk food into our diet it gradually damages the outer lining of the stomach and intestine.  Curry leaves, oil present in the seasoning decrease the spiciness of food and controls the damages from spicy food on stomach and intestine lining.

Curry leaves chutney powder can be taken with food regularly enhances health to a larger extent.  It improves digestion and strengthens the body. It also lowers cholesterol.

Ingredients needed

Curry leaves 250 gm

Roasted gram 250 gm

Asafoetida 1/4 tsp 

Red chilli 5-6

Salt as per taste

Copra  grated 250 gm

Preparation 

Dry curry leaves in shade. Dried leaves, roasted gram, asafoetida, red chilli and salt are powdered. Grated copra is mixed with this. This chutney powder can be taken regularly with food.
