Haralu plant or oudala plant is commonly found in fields, river beds, roadsides as it grows on its own like a weed. This plant is native to Africa and is called the African wonder plant.  Nowadays it is grown all over the world extensively because of its wide range of uses in industries. 

The castor plant can be grown by sowing its seeds. Haralu plant grows in warmer weather conditions and it needs a good amount of sunlight. It takes 6-7 months to get matured seeds from the plant.  There are many varieties of plants that are grown.

Haralu plant in English, known as castor plant, castor bean plant and it is called gandharva hastha, panchaagala, vathaari in Sanskrit. The botanical name of the castor plant is Ricinus communis. It is called arand in Hindi, haralu gida, oudala, oudla in Kannada, amudham in Telugu, amanakku enney in Tamil, avanakenna in Malayalam. 

Haralu plant and its seed oil have many health benefits and it is used in the preparation of many Ayurvedic medicines. It helps to get relief from eye pain, constipation, piles, jaundice and to increase the production of milk in lactating mothers. It is also said that castor leaves have anti-cancer properties. 

The castor plant is commercially grown in many countries and oil is produced in large quantities used in the pharmaceutical industry and other industries. 

Because of the oversized beautiful star-shaped leaves of the plant, the castor plant is used in landscaping as an ornamental plant.

Haralele for lactating mothers

When lactating mothers are facing the problem of producing milk castor leaves comes to help. The breast is washed using the decoction of haralu or castor leaves and the breast is covered with warmed leaves helps to increase the amount of milk. It is also useful when lactating mothers feel pain in their breasts. 

Haralu leaves avoid heavy bleeding

Castor leaves decoction or kashaya also regulates periods and avoids heavy bleeding. 

To cure jaundice

Juice prepared from the shoot of the castor plant is taken two times a day to help to recover from jaundice. 

For joint pain

Warm leaves are covered on the knee and other joints help to recover knee pain and joint pain. Haralu leaf paste is useful to cure sores, gout and rheumatic swellings. 

To cure piles

Haralu leaves are warmed and crushed and applied on the anus part which relieves the pain due to piles. It avoids the condition of bleeding piles.

Haralenne for constipation 

Haralenne with hot milk, coffee or ginger juice, when taken, relieves constipation. It also helps to loosen the stools and improves bowel movement.  Haralenne drops are added to the milk when taken orally relieves constipation in children.

Alovera gel is mixed with haralenne is applied to the anus part relieves from piles pain and inflammation due to piles.

Haralenne is mixed with crushed garlic and it is boiled and cooled. This oil is applied to the knee joint, back and other joints relieves from the pain.

For burning sensation in joints, haralenne is taken with ginger juice and saindhava lavana which relieves the condition. It also relieves constipation.

Haralenne is applied on the body half an hour before bathing regularly makes skin soft and healthier.  If this is followed regularly many ailments of the body are kept at bay. Haralenne applied half an hour before hair wash makes the hair black and shiny. It nourishes the root of the hair and avoids hair fall.

It is said that massaging on the breast with castor oil removes the hardness of the breast. Castor oil is applied to the breast and warm leaves are placed on the breast to cover it which helps to control the condition of breast cancer. Decoction of the castor leaves is also taken orally with this.

Although the castor plant leaves, roots and oil are beneficial in curing many diseases, the seeds of the plant are very poisonous in nature. The seeds contain a compound called ricin is harmful to humans and animals. 

If the seeds are consumed, it causes nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty in breathing, central nervous system depression, fever, convulsion.

Haralu plant is a large shrub or a small tree. It generally grows 5-8 feet. In good weather and soil condition, it grows up to 10 -12 feet. The Castor plant has large star-shaped leaves which are very attractive and this plant is grown as an ornamental plant. This plant produces separate male and female flowers. Windborne pollens are shed by the stamens of male flowers.

The castor seeds are present inside pod-like structures which are green in colour, when it matures it turns to brown colour. The pods burst open to release the seeds into the atmosphere. Sometimes seeds are thrown out to a larger distance. The castor seeds are very attractive and are used in making jewellery. 

Castor oil

Castor oil is extracted using the seeds of the castor plant. Although the seeds are poisonous in nature, the oil extracted from the seeds is edible and non-poisonous in nature. 

Castor oil is extensively used in the manufacturing industry. Castor oil is used in the production of paints and varnishes, water-resistant coatings, inks, soap, plastics and high-performance motor oils. 

Castor oil is also used in home remedies. Castor oil is produced in large quantities in many countries like India, Brazil, China.   

How to make castor oil

Castor seeds are present inside castor pods. These pods turn brown when matures and they are collected and dried under sunlight. They burst open to release seeds and these seeds are roasted for 3-4 minutes.

Then the seeds are ground with water and is added to boiling water. This mixture is boiled till the oil comes to the surface. with constant stirring. As the oil floats on the surface, this oil is separated to another container.  Then oil is cooled and stored in a container. 

During the extraction of castor oil from castor seeds, a large amount of leftover is also produced is called seed cake. This seeds cake is rich in nitrogen and is a good fertilizer.
