Lemon grass,  which is also called citronella grass, malabar grass, fever grass, nimbu ghans in Hindi belongs to grass family and its scientific name is Cymbopogon citratus.

It is native to South East Asia and It is cultivated for culinary purpose and medicinal purpose.

Its fragrance resembles that of lemon, so is the name lemon grass and oil called citronella oil produced from it which is used for many purposes. Lemon grass leaves and oil is used in Ayurvedic medicines for ages.

You may cut a fresh leaf of lemon grass and smell it which relaxing and refreshing fragrance of lemon.

Lemon grass is antibacterial, anti fungal and anti inflammatory and it benefits us in many ways.

    As antidepressant

    Lemon grass tea or decoction reduces stress and anxiety. It relaxes our mind and body. 

    Immunity

    As lemon grass consists of good amount of nutrition, regular use of its tea helps our body to fight many diseases by increasing immunity in our body. 

    Helps in digestion 

    Compound citral present in lemon grass helps in digestion and avoids constipation. It treats stomach related problems. 

    Aids in weight loss

    It boosts metabolism and hence burns unwanted fat. This helps to reduce weight and avoids unwanted fat accumulation in body.

    Lemon grass tea 

    Lemon tea is refreshing herbal drink which detoxifies and rejuvenates our body. It is the best herbal tea which can replace coffee and tea. It relieves from stress and insomnia. Regular taking of this tea improves our body immunity. 

    You can use fresh grass or dried grass for tea.  

    Ingredients needed for tea

    Lemon grass 2-3

    Tulsi leaves 3-4

    Cardamom 2

    Preparation

    Lemon grass with its stalk which is bulged portion at the base is cut into pieces.

    Boil 2 cup of water and add pieces of lemon grass, tulsi to it and boil it till the water amount reduces to half. 

    Then Strain and add powdered cardamom to it and you can drink hot tea with or without honey.

    You can also prepare tea with lemon grass and mint leaves.

    Lemon grass oil

    Lemon grass oil is also called citronella oil which prepared using lemon grass and any other base oil. Both lemon grass and oil is subjected to heat and used for many purposes.

    Lemon grass oil preparation 

    Citronella oil or lemon grass oil can be prepared in home easily. 

    Take lemon grass with its stalk and wash and dry it well. Crush it into small pieces. Take any base oil like coconut oil or olive oil in a bottle and add crushed pieces of lemon grass. Keep this bottle in sunlight for 1-2 days. Strong fragrance of lemon grass added to the oil. Then strain the oil and store it in the bottle.

    Another method of preparing oil is boiling method. Take crushed pieces of lemon grass in a bowl with base oil like coconut oil or olive oil and place this bowl in a pan in which water is boiling. Let it for 5 minutes and then remove the bowl and strain the oil. Strong aroma of lemon grass added to the oil.

    Lemon grass oil is used as insect repellent especially mosquitoes and even lemon grass also grown in gardens and around lawns which avoids the mosquitoes.It is also used in insect sprays. 

    Oil in household items

    Lemon grass oil is used in soaps, candles, perfumes, cosmetics and household detergents. Oil adds up good fragrance to these items.

    Aromatherapy

    Lemon grass oil drops are added to water and steam is inhaled which calms down our mind. It relaxes body and mind and acts as anti depressant. It also cures the condition of insomnia. 

    In massaging 

    Lemon grass oil is used in massaging in Ayurvedic treatments which rejuvenates body. It also treats old body pains.  Massaging with this oil brings glow to our skin.

    Cultivation 

    Lemon grass can be grown very easily in any type of soil and weather conditions. It can grown in pots also. Side shoots around the parent plant are removed and planted in soil. You can provide fertiliser once in a month. 

    After 2-3 months you can harvest leaves with stalk. It can stored in refrigerator. Dried grass can be stored for long time.
